but I'm not sure.
If everything is working - don't worry.

I found the server preferences file and changed it to DEBUG, the server
starts without any trouble but continues to report that it can't find
the mDNSResponderPosix binary and aborts.
So, I've uninstalled, purged and reinstalled from the Debian package

At the moment I'm shut out, when I load the server page and alter a

searching about trying to find a way to change the logging level and

The mDNSresponder is part of SC startup - I think SC can run without it
but you should check SC startup log. Enable logging for startup by
setting "server" logging to INFO and checking the box to remember the
setting at startup. Then click apply. Restart SC and look at the log.

I'm not even sure the problem is with AlienBBC because sometimes
SqueezeCenter itself crashes before then. Looking at the logs it
consistently complains:

mDNSResponderPosix binary! Aborting!
There have been times when SqueezeCen
What are the AlienBBC on Linux symptoms ?
Check the following - depending on success/failure - it will localise
the problem
1. Settings/Advanced/Filetypes - check you have RTSP entries and at
least Flac and WAV are enabled
2. Check Settings/Plugins/Settings/AlienBBC - brings up AlienBBC
settings
That's precisely what I had done, I had just returned to the AlienBBC
site to re-download and install and noticed the exe that installed
mplayer. I had previously done an install on linux (another story) and
had chosen the zip file for Windows, as I had done for Linux. And that
was my problem, a
How did you install AlienBBC - the zip file or the .exe installer ?
If you used the installer - did you run the mplayer test ?

Hello,
I'm having a variant on a problem a few others have reported - that
I've installed the AlienBBC plugin for SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 -

Thanks for the responses.
bpa: I do know others have AlienBBC streaming BBC radio to media
players by transcoding it to an mp3 stream. It just doesn't want to
work for me.
Siduhe: I'm running the server on a "vanilla" XP installation on my
private LAN, so no firewall & low security setting for
As shipped - AlienBBC is designed to only work with Squeezeboxes or
SoftSqueeze. It will not play to stream.mp3.

What security software do you have installed on the XP box? Try adding
an exception for socketwrapper.exe in that program.
If that doesn't work, there is a modified version of socketwrapper on
the AlienBBC site which has fixed the identical problem I and others
have had in the past (you may sti

There's no rush now to get BBC going, the second test will be over

My understanding of the /dev/fd is that they are devices which are
unique to each process - that is why they are linked to /proc and
always owne by the process. As a process opens a new file descriptor
(i.e. an fd) - a coresponding /dev/fd/ will be created.
So if you are a user and you do a ls

It's running on a headless self-assembled PC. The original OS install
was Debian Sarge, upgraded to Etch.

I know there are Debiamn iusers who use AlienBBC without problems but I
still think /dev/fd is still the key as the error message showed up on
the standalone test of mplayer.
Is this a PC debian or some sort of special device (e.g. Thecus NS5200)
/dev/fd are devices that relate to file descript
Yes I do:
$ ls -l /dev/fd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2007-04-24 05:59 /dev/fd -> /proc/self/fd

Do you have the devices /dev/fd on your system ? Some Linux distros do
not have or cannot have these devices installed
