This strikes me as brilliant if I can just get it to work.
I would like to run this installed on a USB pen drive, and then plug
that into a computer such as:

To answer your questions:
The machine I am currently using to run SlimCD has 512 Mbytes of RAM.
The USB pen drive has 1 Gbyte of space.
Output from "df -h":

Ok, this seems to be broken: the slimserver user can't write to that
folder. Please run "sudo chown -R dsl:staff /tmp/.slimcache" and try to
start slimserver again. I'll have a look at your backup file later today.

That worked, however since /tmp is a link to /ramdisk/tmp, I presume
when I reboot DSL on the USB pen drive, that the owner of .slimcache
will revert back to root?

I don't understand: when I'm looking at that folder on a freshly booted
SlimCD

I ran into trouble attempting to modify the /etc/init.d/slimserver
script to add the chown command before the chmod commnad. I get an
error that I am attempting to change a file in a read-only file
system.
I note that in /etc/init.d that slimserver ->
/KNOPPIX/etc/init.d/slimserver
So,

Ouch! I thought this should work. I'll see what I can do.
In the meantime you can fix this issue by using /opt/bootloc

Running SlimCD off a 1 GByte USB pen drive: I scanned my 8,000 track
FLAC library, shutdown, rebooted, and everything was there, including
the folder art. I like this. I have been running Slimserver for a day
this way and playing music, with no more major issues.

/opt/bootlocal.sh in order to have SlimCD mount my music library
automatically at boot time was the following:

I notice that cron doesn't run the backup.sh script in /etc/cron.daily
unless you copy/rename it to a file without the .sh suffix.

Thanks for the pointer - I'll have to check this. (But basically crond
isn't configured at all in the standard configuration)
