I'm not aware of any issues with Java 1.6 on linux, have you any more details on what aspect of it fails to work ? Also have you tried 'anywikidraw' which is intended to replace the pwmikidraw plugin to a large extent. I've been leaning towards a Canvas based approach instead of Java applets so
