There seems to be something about the regex in the if markup that
limits the if statement to text that does not contain a ":)". The same
seems to go for page text variables (with the exception of ROSPatterns.)
I will try to fix it, but I am not great with regex.

I liked the idea of putting something in page actions. Could I trouble
you for some hints as to how to make a custom action that would
protect the article using the editors password? I did look at the
custom actions, but I am afraid I just did not understand how to do
this.

It looks like SiteAdmin/AuthList on pmwiki.org has a bug of some sort.
Locally it works fine, but on the pmwiki site all I see is

You can specify another imit in your config file. Try setting:
$MaxPageTextVars = 1000;
before you call PageTextVar() (if you do)
The count is per page, as you can see in the definition of PageTextVar()
where the increment is done a specific page's status.
