I have a 12x CDROM Apple Model M3628(TEAC CD211E) from a PB 1400c/166. The drive suffered damage when the laptop fell off a table. (PB is fine). The faceplate tray and laser are fine, but the locking mechanism plastics (the thing that locks the tray in during cd operation) has broken loose

That's what I suspected, but wasn't sure. Some kind gentleman sent me the Apple link to 3400 manuals ( I don't have one). I don't have enough money to buy the powerbook I want (the 17 inches G4) so I'll usb/firewire to my 3400. I will also bump up the ram to 144 while I salivate over the G4!

Hmm, last I heard, there were no 16-bit PCMCIA USB cards for Macintosh. They all require CardBus slots. The 1400c does not have CardBus. Thus, you cannot use USB on a 1400c. Otherwise, I also seem to recall that the OS 8.1 USB extensions ONLY work on the iMac. That is, I'm pretty sure that
