Somewhat on topic, but isn't there a program that'll do AppleTalk over a
TCP/IP connection? I seem to remember there was a somewhat pricey program
that did that, but I'm not sure if there was a shareware or freeware
version that did the same.

I would argue Apple has no direct competitors, whether it's in the
music or PC market. People are either going to buy an Apple, or
anything BUT an Apple.
