Would you say checking to see whether the RAM in the pb 3400 is
seated properly was more or less a trivial task? Same for the PRAM
battery.
Do I need any special tools or anything? It's probably not as simple
as my 17" G4 Powerbook's removable keyboard, I'm afraid.

I've got a problem. My little 3400 was chugging along really nicely
until earlier today, while booting up (still on the os 9.1 screen:
loading extensions) I accidentally hit the battery release and,
because I wasn't plugged into the wall, the computer promptly shut off.
I slid the battery
OK, please excuse my revealed ignorance in asking this question
because despite collecting low-end macs for some time now, I have
recently started dabbling in portables. I've searched the archives to
no avail. (I did see a lot of "pram" entries though, which has lead
me down an entire new research
