I hadn't considered that a different brand of card would make a
difference. CompUSA had 128 MB SanDisk (a pretty reliable brand) CF cards
for $39.95 after rebate, so I bought one. I guess I can use it in my
digital camera if it won't work as a boot disk. I might check at
newegg.com and
I was able to create a boot disk on a 16mb CF card, though I did CHEAT. I
used the system off of a MacOS 8.1 Disk Tools, which is a great way to
create a small and fast starting emergency boot disk.
I think I was able to create a bootable CF using a minimal 8.5 install,

Thank you for your reply. I'm hoping others reply to this thread, as I know you and I
aren't the only ones who have tried this! :-)
I've tried multiple boots and restarts. Bus error every single time. FWIW, I am
using a SanDisk 128 MB CF card and a SanDisk CF-PCMCIA adapter.

I'm booting a 1400 from CF with 8.1 just fine; Sandisk 64 meg w/ Sandisk PC
Card adapter. The goal was same as yours- get a Speed disk boot disk made
so I could defragment files.
