have you ensured the jumpers are set and also the dips are set for
the scsi to ide adapter.
4=on, 5=on and scsi set to master, cf set to master
However i've noticed that in my 540c the ide drive is without jumper
inserted, but it works

I Guess Thats the reason why my 540 would not boot however the 550
did fine with both the jumpers set. I am going to have to go back and
start dismantling the books again to see where i can get now with the
bit of new info i have.

I had to take the drive from the 230 put it in an external case and
then attach the case via scsi to my 5300 format and install the os on
the cf card then put it back in the duo 230 to boot.
I never got it to boot in my 540 but the 550 i had booted straight
up with it in, as does the
