what OS on your machine? IIRC 9.1 includes the zip driver but earlier doesn't.

I've just received another 3400c as a backup for my original one. It
came with a VST zip drive, the one which slips into the
cd/floppy/etc slot.
Neither computer will boot with the drive ins

Zip drives had their time. They were a great
improvement over Syquest Drives but for a Powerbook
3400 you're better off using your Compact Flash PCMCIA
adapter and a Flash card rather than wasting money on
zip disks.
You tried zapping the PRAM right?

I had a similar problem on a 3400.
In the control strip do you see an Iomega Zip icon? If not (as I did) I had
to reinstall the Iomega Drivers Installer which I downloaded. (Version 3.0)
The drive has worked ever since.
