We've been using Tbird here for years and works great. Inbox and sent
folders can get too large and we try to make sure they stay under 4gb as
they sometimes corrupt over this size. We tell users to keep these two
folders pretty empty by either deleting or archiving wanted messages to

Tbird can do this if it gets too many messages in the inbox...like thousands.
If you google it there is a procedure where you delete, essentially, the index
file that Tbird uses to make data access faster.
