When I need to take screenshots I use Gadwin Printscreen Freeware. It looks

Running whatever it is you need to capture in a virtual machine can also
make it easier. For example, I have done some writing about Ubuntu. I
ran it in a Virtual PC, then I could drop down a list or menu and
position the mouse cursor nicely on it, then Right-Alt to switch out of

Yes, Snagit can capture drop-down lists and menus. It also does time captures
if you like, but I
don't really need to do this to capture a menu as there is a specific mode to
capture them. I

Screenshot v7 deluxe does timed captures. (The current version is 8.)
Not that I've tried it... So I just did and it worked reasonably well
except that when I chose to capture the mouse pointer, it seemed to pick
up the pointer state at the time I started the timed capture and did not

Thanks for that input Alan - I wonder if Dave or Rick can comment on the

The best approach for lists etc is a timed capture, but I've only seen
that on Ubuntu.

I'm a big fan of HardCopy Pro -
Been using it since '91 -
I like it cause it's:
1. SMALL
2. can save in many formats
3. can rework the resolution / colour depth with one click.
4. taking over my print-screen button on a daily basis !

I will second SnagIt from Techsmith. It is the only screen capturing software I
need. It is
especially strong in the annotation functionality with everything you mentioned
as well as "stamps",
which are graphics you can add to your images. I use the editor to edit
graphics all the time and to

The GIMP will do screen captures but I wouldn't necessarily call it
quick and easy to annotate unless you're already familiar with it. But
it's free. I've also used a program called ScreenShot from Broderbund
for years. You can set hot keys for different types of captures,
annotate, etc.
