We wrote software for the Army to write and re-write
the disks . It took severals hours to clean a disk
properly.
Of course if their position was being overrun by the
enemy, they were supposed to place the removables into
a container and burn it with a thermite grenade.

After years hearing about thermite bombs in Star Wars, I was happy to
find out years later that thermite actually exists. Gives me hope that
someone somewhere has a laser cannon. Probably them damn Eye-ranians!
Watch Brainiac on Sky1 and probably elsewhere, they have loads of fun
with thermite

Any suggestions on software packages (free is good) would be greatly
appreciated.
Keeping the OS would also be good.
TIA

Ideally, you have a clean copy of the OS originally installed, or a
rescue partition or Ghost image you can restore the disk to pristine
condition with. (Make sure you have bootable media

You probably are not allowed to do that!
How about putting the disk into a USB drive box the running deleting
software on it.
