I'm new to GIT. I've used CVS and SVN.
With CVS, version numbers could be automatically updated within the
file so you know from the version numbers you knew if you were upto
date or not as the number was human readable ((lcoal) 1.2.3 vs (cvs)
1.2.4 for example).
With SVN, you could see

Hi peeps,
script.aculo.us is from now on developed using Git (hosted at github)
for source code management and revision control, and Lighthouse for
bug tracking.
Why git instead of Subversion?
I don't think GIT supports the keywords in files like revision and
others.
I remember wondering that myself. After a quick google I saw a post on
the git mailing list
that shot down the idea of using the key words.
