I think this Apple specialist is misinformed. I have been leaving my 2009 MacBook Pro plugged in for the past six years, and nothing is happened like that. Also, El Capitan runs fine on older systems. It's Yosemite that sluggish in general. I am six years in, and this MacBook Pro is still
