libreoffice has good dbf support.
Besides, it is really time to retire Shape files ... if we all focus on
improving geopackage support we can soon have a real alternative.

QGIS 2.16 will come with Processing instead of ftools in the vector menu.
And in processing, we can already set the default output to sqlite,
geojson, geopackage ... so the answer is coming slowly ;-)
