Hi Uwe, All "map_xx" variables are only available on the map frame item itself (when it is selected) - nowhere else. Items in print composer are on the same hierarchy - so can't see each other's scope or variables in each scope. But all items in a composition can see the "composition" variables

Sorry I should point out that my feature I am trying to edit has multiple donut type areas within it, as I just tried it on a 'normal' feature from the same layer and it worked - so perhaps my question is are there known issues when trying to split features that have donuts existing in them?!
