Hi there and welcome to QGIS,
QGIS can read (and write) to multiple data formats/file types so try out lots

easiest way to find data is usually via a search with terms such as opendata,
wildlife etc.

Are these regions something common already in use (ie suburbs, localities, ABS
zones etc)? You may find that a dataset may already be in existence that you
can find on the web and then edit to your needs. If not then its probably a

Hi Lars,
If the background is a raster map (like OpenStreetMap) then no, you cant
control the labelling. You would need to add a vector layer for the roads and
then style the labels from that new layer.

Hi Stephen,
You might let us know your operating system and which version of QGIS you are
using because it works as you desire in the latest development (3.24.3) and
Long Term Release versions (3.22.7). It may just be a matter of updating QGIS.

Hi there,
Your settings look correct to create an atlas BUT if the three lines are
actually close together then they may still appear in each atlas page,
depending on your map settings. You could try to reduce the margin around the
feature.
