Hi Agustin,
nope, no answer.
Actually my very disappointing workaround was, to install VirtualBox and
Windows on it and run QGIS from there.
On native Linux, i only use the debian-nightly master for playing around
(or better: watching it crash).
Cheers

Really sad.
Is the problem with Mrsid the only reason why you have had to take the
VirtualBox solution?
Crashes of debian-nightly master are to be expected, though.
So, we should all understand that the only way to use Mrsid on linux
qgis is and will be
that the user compiles gdal with that

Workaround is to compile it yourself, I guess you have to compile gdal

It's not much harder than building gdal only.

Digging out this old thread, cause the situation didn't
The UbuntuGIS repository only has libgdal-mrsid package for Ubuntu Lucid and
Oneiric. There's a new Ubuntu distro just around the corner (12.10), but
still no signs of libgdal-mrsid for Ubuntu Precise. So I was wondering if
there's a work around to open MrSID images in QGIS 1.8 on a Ubuntu 12.04
see the text in bold at http://gdal.org/frmt_mrsid.html
I believe he is referring to the lack of the libgdal-mrsid package,
available for older Ubuntu releases in the ubuntugis repository.
