It is a bit tricky to do the manual installation of plugins. There are some
issues which I've faced if there are any old versions

I have the GTOPO30 digital elevation model as a georeferenced raster in qgis
and a file of lat long coordinates I want to get the elevation of, how do I do
it?
The points plot out fine over the DEM, they are clearly matched up correctly
but how to get the value of the height out of the raster
by using the grass toolbox:
import the DEM and the points into a grass database and use v.to.rast

Jurgiel. Maybe it is helpful as well.

Import your points as a shape and use the Point Sampling Tool, is made for that.
Be careful with projections.
