We've merged our Historical maps together into a single raster for each
historical map, you might want to try that - it's much easier dealing with
a single file than thousands of little ones.
Alternately as noted you could use a virtual raster, but I found that
mosaicing all of our

All such maps are calibrated within Mapinfo, and are usually in the form of
