When I'm in bed, I try to make myself spasm to help me cough and I also will raise my head up with my hospital bed.  When I made my wheelchair, I try to make myself spasm and throw myself forward to put pressure on my abdomen to help me cough.  Jim

Hi Theo, Many times, quads need help or assistance with coughing. Actually the diaphragm needs a short pull to assist in the coughing process. Physical Therapist, are excellent trainers in the process as you need to support the diaphragm and not the rib cage. Thumping on the back is also goo

This is what we vent users use. http://www.jhemerson.com/coughassist.htm You don't need to be on a vent to use it though. It's just more common with vent users because we often have no diaphragm movement. A good option for someone like yourself would be the assisted cough. It works awesome
