It's exactly the problem I had. It was a while ago now, so I can't remember the details, but it did involve fully dismantling the odo down to component parts and reassembling with a washer at one end. I think it was one of the drums catching on the bracket and so the washer was to space it back

The locks should reach a 'dead' section at the end of each direction of travel (similar to a wiper motor which parks in it's usual one position) - In each of these positions there shouldn't be current through the windings. I guess that even though the mechanism now moves freely that it isn't
