No, i said the Mondeos always had a 10 o clock starter.
I think this is because the MTX75 gearbox has always has the starter there.
The actual starter position depends on the gearbox as the starter bolts
to that not the engine.
But the engine needs to have clearance for wherever the starter is.
Jim, are you saying that the Mondeo's regardless of silver top or
black top always had a 4 o'clock starter, I'll stand corrected but am
prertty sure the early Mondeo's had a 10 'o'clock. I'm pretty sure
that Paul Fennell's Xtreme engine is an 1800 silver top from a Mondeo
and has the 4'o' clock s
block that gets in the way.
Just to add to the options the Yamaha Zetec-s has the starter in a different
place again !!

Just looked at some photos. The standard blacktop Mondeo version is
as you say 10 o clock sitting above the sump and to fit to the Type
9, the alloy sump of the black top had to be cut away at about 4 o
clock to get the starter in. The silver top mondeo mates directly to
the type 9. Would up lo
Hmm.
I would say the Silvertop starter is either at 4 o clock (front starter,
Escort or Fiesta) or 10 o clock (it's above the base of the block) for
the rear starter (late Escort, Mondeo).
The blacktop starter is in exactly same 10 o clock position as the
silver top, or at least on my ST170 bla
Burton Power do a heat blanket for the starter.

There is a Ford heat shield for the front mount starter motor available
Ah just read your post again Jim, I see where you are coming from the
difference is in the alloy sump casting, which on the black top has
the starter in a different position. The engines are the same but the
casting is where the difference is.

We are either at cross purposes or one of us is way off. On the Xtreme
fitted to a type 9 gearbox, the silvertop will bolt directly on,
whereas the black top requires the alloy webbing to be carved away on
the sump housing to enable the starter to be fitted in the same
position as the black top

I have to say that I suffered no end of trouble with front mount
starter. A stall in traffic and not being able to start for a few mins
being very embarrassing. Rear mounted starter no problems at all :-)

starter IB5 gearbox can be found in the later Mk5 and MK6

Oh one fundamental difference between them inside is different piston heights
and con rod lengths. If you buy pistons for the later engine you need con rods
to match (as Jim and I found out on zetec turbo #1).
(please correct my terminology if 'height' is the wrong word)

When trying to identify these engines, it's not a good idea to rely
solely on the colour of the rocker cover because sometimes people swap
new covers onto old engines to make them look "better". Or sometimes
people producing custom finished rocker covers supply only the older
type with the raised

I'm sure there are more doifferences and Jim probably has a godd
The starter is in the same place at the rear on both the black and
silvertop Zetecs.
Some of Mk3 Fiesta and Mk5 Escort Zetecs had the starter at the front,
the same place as the CVH so you can use the same gearbox with the
silver top Zetec.
I think there is some parts of the Sump casting in the
Black or silver is the rocker cover colour (I think). Mine is silver top early
engine but with parts of the black top turbo sump.
