Router firewall should have nothing to do with connecting to WiFi, leave
that alone. Nor does having LMS running affect player connection to
WiFi.
Forget Controller for now, just get Radio connected manually.
Radio > Settings > Advanced > Networking > Choose Network > Wireless

1. The router does operate on 2.4Ghz (and 5 GHz)
2. I'm reluctant to turn off encryption until I've exhausted everything
else. I'm afraid I'll have to reset everything for all devices when I
switch it back on again.

That's true, but if the Radio indicates that there is no connection by
displaying the WiFi symbol in red it could also mean that there is no
connection to LMS although the WiFi connection is fine.
