Have you tries setting the x-axis labels vertically? Maybe it does not think
you have enough space for closer labels.

Hi Bruce,
I have tried various things as suggested. and more, including just having
one series, but the only control that I can get to adjust the label spacing
is the minimum separation. Not sure what is awry here as I have managed to
get this to work previously.
