Mitch: Shimano is usually conservative with their ratings so if this unit is rated to 34, there's a good chance it'll handle 36. On their website, Rivendell recenlty mentioned they using that 12-36 9 speed a lot. You may want to consult them on what RD they use but I doubt it's anything
