I patch the tubes until the valve stem leaks at the tube junction, this seems to go before the tube rots. Patching the tube also lets you know where on the tire the puncture occurred. I always align the tire label with the valve stem. If it is not obvious where on the tire the puncture occurred

After a while of doing it daily, you adjust and it gets easier and "normal".  Also, you don't "keep hammering away" day to day: you do easier recovery rides in between.  I've read time and again that the biggest "training error" people commit is hammering away all the time, never taking it easy
