Sorry coming to this thread late but is there a problem with Ortliebs? I
commuted for several years with two Ortlieb panniers and they took seconds to
mount and take off. I’d walk into my office with one over each shoulder every

Alright, I've got some Albatross bars on the way, but I'm still on the hunt
for a Nitto M1 aka Mark's rack. Let me know if you have one and would like
to change that?

John, thanks a lot for the head’s up. I actually live not far from their
headquarters here in Portland. I have not given them serious consideration
before. I will give them a better look. They do look like nice bags. I must

Deacon, I hitch my hoss (Sam) to the post all day and can’t leave the
saddlebags. I use my saddlebags not just for grocery shopping, but for my work
stuff (I teach and need 3-ring binders, notebooks, books, etc.). I also want
bags that do 2x duty for touring, when I get the chance. So,
yeah when you commute you don’t leave your bags on the bike. That said
there are properties in a bag that either work in an environment like PDX

Gotcha, John. I’ve been surprised by how small the delta in mounting time is
between Riv’s panniers and modern systems, but can see how it would be a bit

There's also the Japan/Taiwan thing. Even if the quality is the same the Japan
frame is always going to have a value the Taiwan does not. Plus the Japan bike
would sell for a (much) higher price if they were both available new right now.

I have and love a 56cm SO. It is odd that they rarely come up for sale, but my
estimation has always been that they are less sought after than quickbeams. I
love my SO, but I’m always a little envious of the QB name. I think that’s what
makes these bikes less sought after/valuable. $1500 seems

Based on your description of the way you use your panniers I would suggest

Thanks for the head’s up, Patrick. I have seen these before, and they look like

I'd pay $1000 tops for a clean complete SO, and that's adding in a little
consideration for the seller having to ship. This one with the "leaned on a

Doesn’t the S1 have better tire clearance than the QB? My new to me QB
looks like it might fit a 38mm + fender max, which is a bit disappointing
coming from a BMC MC (which could fit a 44mm + fender).
A moot point since the S1 didn’t come in my 64cm size, but I’m curious

The Simpleone has nicer (more subdued) graphics, but is less famous than

Not what you were asking, John, but would the Rivendell Back-a-bike Bags work

Hi John,
I use the front Super Cs on the rear Nitto big rack (Campee?) from Riv but
also on old man mountain racks and blackburn racks with no issues. I also
use the Super C commuter bag on the Nitto rear rack with no issues (as
expected, since they have the same attachment principle).

Thanks for the advice.
Are they easy to remove from the bike? Looks like there’s a pinch mechanism?
(Im used to panniers with a bungee and S hook to hold the bag under tension,
you see).

Is the price really very out of whack? Not wishing to be contentious, just
curious. I do remember the frames being cleared out at $800 under specials, but
weren't they a $1200 frame/fork/HS when first offered? I suppose $1560
complete/used should get nicer spec, but these come up very rarely
I have a set which I believe use the system you're describing. I have no
complaints about the mounting system and have used them on pretty rough
stuff. I have used them on a Tubus Tara and a Nitto 34f/Big Front Rack. The
lower hook does seem a little flimsy, but again I haven't had issues. I
agreed. And that chainring

We are talking about the same bags.
Good to know they are secure and easy enough to engage and disengage.
Are you using these on a Rivendell rack, or some other?

I'm curious if the "new" mounting system is:
1. As secure as a standard good ol' hooks and bungee system, and

I love Carradice stuff, but am dubious about this securing system.
Never. I'll be shocked if Riv built more than 50 total, it wasn't around very
long. MUSA? I don't remember this being a Waterford frame, but maybe I'm wrong.
