Oh, "ditched a chain" was my editing mistake, it was going to be "ditched a

Yes, I noticed it on the clear ones I had, but I'm not much of a rain rider. I
ordered black this time because the clear looks terrible on black bars.

The long Jones grips really make an already awesome bar even better. I
haven't used the black grips but the clear ones can get pretty slick when
they are wet. Something to keep in mind if this is an all-weather bike.

I swapped the WTB tires that came with my Race Lite with Ikons; very nice
rolling tires for such large knobs. Of course, for the Matthews, they would
be overkill, so it's Thunderburts or stay with the Big Ones (or possibly
one day try the Snoqualmie Pass).

Thank you, Eric, for that Park video link. I got my 11x dialed in, at least as
far as a test ride up and down the block goes, and I now have all 11 gears and
all 11 are behaving. I may actually have a handle on how to adjust this

I actually prefer Maxxis Ikons to Racing Ralphs. They felt just as fast to

Thanks, Patrick; this is useful information.
Our riding situations and wants differ, of course. My riding is roughly 1/3
pavement and 2/3 very often sandy soil; and of the sandy surfaces, almost
all are flat and largely straight; so I do less cornering, especially at
speed; thus grip in corners is

Patrick, I just learned the Soma Cazadero is now available in a 50mm size,
tubeless ready. I run the 42mm version with tubes on my AHH, and can
confidently vouch for them. Amazingly quiet and supple on pavement, with some
bite for dirt. The 50 might be too narrow for your application though.
You can order direct from GB, and with the current exchange rate it's
actually cheaper to order through them than through a distributor. It will
probably take longer to get the saddle, though.

I'd go with A23s and 32 to 36 spokes laced to Deore XT hubs for the mixed
terrain riding you describe. They work well, aren't overbuilt, are
reasonably cheap, easily serviceable, and still tubeless if that is
something that you eventually
D.P. I know you've tried different versions of the Thunder B's. And I
believe there are some new constructions of that tire as well.
Do you have a sense which is best riding , most supple for road, hardpack
trail, gravel as well as occasional single track and mud?

Thanks for the info on the Aubisque! I wasn't aware of that model. My
research shows its the same proportions as the Mente and the leather

between the two. Trying to find a US seller is not easy.

Has anyone used both the TB and either the SP or BO? Can you say how the TB
rolls *on pavement* compared to the other tire?
Strong scuttlebutt that the TB, knobby as it is, rolls so well that the
advantage of knobs in sand might make up for any slight deficiency in
pavement rolling resistance.
