Hi Minh,
I read all the thoughtful responses, and they brought up ideas I hadn’t
considered. My suspicion on the cause of any shimmy is the stacked flex
points in the handlebar to load system.
Your setup looks fine and I think a basket is the height of chic. If you

Jacob: I defy and contradict and rebut Garth when he says: "*The term

Thanks for the clarification, everyone! I think it makes sense now - it's
all about the outer diameter and how much extra rubber the frame can take.
Got it. The rim is 700c.

Oh you'd probably have to dig a while to come upon this information, most
of us only know it cuz we were around when the "700c mountain bike" was a

29er was born.

Thanks everyone! I think I understand now: 59+cm Clem's have a 700c rim
and a frame that can accommodate 29er tires for the extra rubber in the way
that the 650b can offer more rubber to frames originally intended for 700c,
i.e. to meet outer diameter limitations.

My understanding is it's a colloquially 29er was referring to a 2"+ tire
that makes the diameter approximately 29" vs a 700c with a 23mm is
approximately 27".

No biggie Jacob . Bike "standards" are truly a pile of madness ! One can
even buy some Schwalbe 28" tires, mount them on a 700c rim, and ride them
on a 29er ... and it all refers to the same wheel diameter ! Yippee !

Thanks, folks! I appreciate that. Makes sense now, the part where it says

Jacob, 700c and 29er, 29in all refer to the same rim diameter of 622mm. The

Hey Jacob,
700c and 29er are the same thing - just called differently between the road
and mountain bike worlds.

Hi, All.
I did a quick search but didn't find a thread, so let me know if you know
of one re this topic and I can remove this re Clem L's 59cm with 29ers:
I noticed on the Riv site that 59cm Clem's can take 700c rims and "29er
Tires". Does that mean that it can take 29in rims, or...? I may

probably wouldn't own 3 rivs if I hadn't owned (and still do) a 1993 X0-1.
So maybe the X0-1 was the gateway drug. Still the best orange.
Cream-colored tires are quite fetching.

hey all thanks for comments. i guess part of me asking is that this

oof Justin, good catch. Saturday is out for me too, but i could do Sunday
and prefer on the early-ish side, hopefull that leaves things open enough

further discussion over the next week or so and we can try and lock it in

I was at the local Ace Hardware here in San Luis Obispo, and got comments

Hey Everybody!
Last night I rode my Rambouillet to see Midnight Oil play in Los Angeles.
While looking for a safe place to lock up, a man in line approached me
because he was also a big RIv fan. We chatted, took pictures, but I can't
remember his name. I think he said he lives in Palos Verdes.
With kids in the mix, I always consider planning grownup activities a long
shot, so I'm not to be planned around...
But that Saturday has become a no go (skate date with my younger, music
performance for my older). Sunday is tentatively wide open though!
aside from ride planning, if anyone wants
I'm 6'2, 92-93 pbh. I ride one of the newer 60cm appaloosa's. I have the
55mm reneherse knobby fleecer ridge, no toe overlap problems at all. I've
only run the bike so far with two setups - losco's on a 11cm tallux, and a
the riv bull moose. I really like both depending on my mood or situation.
I also think your setup looks good Minh, I'm a big fan of the shop sack &
137 combo, however I use the nitto m1 rack. In my experience i think there
is always going to be some degree of flex when you have a rack
combined with swept back bars and a quill stem, especially as your load

Wally, I love the set-up you've got there, especially up front. *I wish I
was a little bit taller...*
Minh, I've owned a QB for 5 or 6 years. I recently traded my Orange 54 for
a better-fitting, but less-fast ;) Silver 56.
The 54 always had a front basket on a small Campee rack. I camped and
Welcome to the PlatyPose Posse, Christian,
I love the story and love the bike. I got mine last year (First ever Riv)
and I'm still making adjustments to it. I love the ride. I wish you many
happy miles on it and look forward to hearing about your racing adventures
like Leah.

Another thing to try and eliminate shimmy is to use a fork crown mounted
brake cable stop instead of the one at the headset. Its worked for me on
several bikes and now its all I use. Steve

Hey all,
I've seen a few Carradice/Fabio's chest setups with the bag lowered from
the flat section of the drop bars. Seems like you need to then strap the
lower part of the bag to a front rack. Not sure exactly how this is done -
you can sort of see it here:
>From your pictures, your front rack/basket seems to be set up as good as it
can be, i.e., the rack is as low as possible and all the weight is on the
rack, none is on the bars. I do not see any improvements there
So the shimmy is likely caused by the amount of weight on the front and the
