John - Ive ridden extensively with both studs and regular tires through severe Minnesota and Alberta winters. Back when winters had a fair amount of temperature consistency I found fat MTB tires were excellent. I loved when the cold weather hit -19*c and packed snow becomes hard and squeaky.
