I used Hetres (42's) on my GAP/C&O ride and was very happy with the ride on
both trails. As others have said, the surfaces are not at all the same. You
could use much skinnier tires for the GAP. When I left the GAP,and rode onto
the C&O, it had rained the previous day and the C&O was pretty
The GAP is nice and smooth crushed limestone - depending on the wetness, super
big tires might make for slow going. If speed is no worry, you'll definitely
appreciate extra volume on the C&O. I would personally go for a tire in the mid
to high 30s, width wise, but YMMV.

i used 700x38mm tires on the C/O and they were fine. the gap is much smoother

I am doing the GAP and C&O from Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. in May and
was wondering what the opinion was of using 50mm Big Apples for this ride.
