Given that (as I assume -- correct me if wrong) your friend won't be seeking high performance with an old Rockhopper, and given the wide range of tire sizes available in 559, I'd say that you ought to keep the 559 wheels. You can run 32 mm Paselas or 50 or 60 mm Big Apples and much in between.
