Could you help me understand the allure of frame bags vs. traditional
panniers for bike packing? The main argument I've heard is squeezing
through tight spaces. I've never understood this. My panniers are not wider
than my legs are on the bike, and in LCG the bike
I have ridden the same off-road rides with bikepacking gear and with
panniers. For me, when I was pushing the bike, the rear panniers got
in the way of my legs, particularly on narrow trails where I needed to
get close to the bike. YMMV.
The other appeal is simply simplicity. Racks can loosen up.
I'm no off road traveler, but I do know that there is a great difference
between wide open roads and trails in much of the SW and the more
convoluted and overgrown trails I've seen in photos of Eastern forest rides
-- or for that matter in the middle of our bosque. Perhaps the rackless

I agree with what Anne says. While I have a strong appreciation for canvas
and leather bags, the bikepacking rackless bags are lighter and IMO better
engineered. I can travel further and with greater ease. I also find that my
load is better balanced which on technical trails makes the ride
