FWIW I too have a pbh of 84 and ride a 52 sam with delight. Thought
About needing a bigger frame but am often happy with the top tube
clearance especially
in trails.
Cheers,

PBH 82.5: the 56 was just a touch big but doable; a 54 would be
perfect (doesn't exist), so the 52 was fine. Seems like at 84, 56'd
be ideal.

I wouldn't mind a bit more
You should be fine. I have an 83 PBH and ride a 56cm Sam with 40mm
slicks or 42mm semi knobbies, even on rough single track. Plenty of
crashes and dismounts, and no damage to the tender bits (yet).
The advantage is that I can get drop bars high enough to mount a stem-
mounted child seat (Bobike
I have a PBH of 84.5 (5' 10 165) and a 56 Sam. My Sam is a great
bike. I rode the 52 and it felt a little small. I am mostly riding on
road although I have had the Sam on a few fire trails and it is great.
There was some debate at Riv HQ about sizing as 84 -85 is the tipping

I'm riding Andrew's old Sam now. PBH of 82.5 and 5' 10'. Not a whole

the earlier models that has a shorter top tube, i think 57. anyway. i
have a saddle height of 756mm and a reach of 53 cm and the fit on the
bike is perfect with noodles and a 9cm stem.

If I were an 84 I'd want to try the 54.

I'm an 87, and I owned a 56 Sam. With Jack Browns I found the standover to
be right at the 83.4 they claim. I can't see a particular reason a true 85
would have a problem with a 56 Sam, especially considering Grant himself ran
a 60 Sam for a while with few complaints or issues besides that it
