I must have been thinking of the 16. 15 - 17 is not that big but since
it's right in the heart of the my riding it does sometimes feel a bit off.
The 11 - 28, which I run on both my ram tandem has much more noticeable
jumps.

Michael,
Thanks for explaining your take on this.

The front shift up is a bit slower but the real issue is searching for the
next gear way at the other end of the cassette. I run an 11-28 and have a
strong preference for closely spaced gears. The jump from 13 to 15 is
already larger than I like, so I certainly wouldn't go any wider. With
Given your preference for close spacing, isn't the 11-28 anomalous? That's
a fairly wide-range cassette...I suppose it depend on how many speeds
you're running, but after a little while, I found the 11-28 8s
uncomfortable. I'm much happier with an SRAM 12-26 9s cassette.

that's a worthwihile project. My buddy turned an outer chainring into a
bash guard for his wife's Univega Nexus conversion. He set the bike on a
repair stand and a grinder on a vise. He turned the crank and gradually
dialed the grinder in until the teeth were gone.

I'd choose for the road, but it still gives me many useable gears in the

9 speed cassette.

Damn! 16-26 9 speed. Over and out.

Michael,
If you would prefer more closely spaced gears (13,14,15 vs 13,15) why don't
you use a tighter cassette and a third chainring?
Also are you using 8sp? I thought 11-18s usually went 14,16 not 13,15.

I'm working on a similar conversion although I'm running the (formerly)

I run a similar setup with a 16t jump, 46/30, and initially I was very
unhappy with the pattern. But with the right cassette, I find it works for
me. I think that's an important part of the mix. Just switching over to
the big jump won't always do the job.

I'd already switched my cassette recently and the fact that I could stay in
the big ring so much more with the 11-34 is what actually convinced me a
wide low double was right for me.
I thought about 46/30 but I was running a 26 tooth granny before and I
didn't want to jump up 4 teeth. There's a
Are you cycling offroad? 38/24 seems small for road use. You'll probably be
riding in the small cogs a lot if it's on the road. Is it the frame that
doesn't allow for an inner chain ring in a good way, or do you just need to
find a better bottom bracket?

Looks good! That's very useful gearing. I've been running a similar setup
for a few years, and it's working so well I wouldn't want to use anything
else.

No mine is 44/28. Someone else was using 38/24. I don't think I'd want to
go any lower than 44 for the kind of riding I do. With my triple the big
ring was 46 and I used the 46x11 on almost every ride. Now I've got 44x11,

I bet that will do everything you want it to do.

let us know how it works for you. My one experiment with a 16 tooth
difference left me unhappy with the shifting pattern. But I ride a lot of
rolling terrain where fast shifting gets rewarded, so that probably
influenced my reaction.

I rode it 25ish miles last night and never got out of the big, er, middle
ring. I felt like when I had the XD600 triple with the 46 big ring that I
could have stayed in the big ring all the way up in the back but I was
concerned about cross chaining so I didn't go past the third one from the
top.
