I tend to do long rides in Voler cycling shorts that fit well and don't cost as much as other lycra brands. But a gusseted short with either capilene boxers such as this for hot weather http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/mens-active-classic-boxers?p=45096-0-660 or wool for not so hot weather
