Absolute best thing is to take them as accompanied baggage. Shipping
through a courier service will be costly and the bikes are probably
(although maybe not?) over-dimension for USPS. Receiving complications in
the UK (customs clearance, local delivery, handling fees) make it an
unattractive op
For what it's worth, our plan for our "someday" bikepacking trip of Scotland is
to buy bikes over there then sell when we leave. That or fly them with us in a
box.

I read a book recently about 2 guys who did it without any money or equipment.
Some kind of weird social experipent. They started at Lands End literally in
their underwear, scrounged clothes, bikes etc and took it from there.
