I did it last year, from Fort Worth to DC, for my C tour. I'm planning to do
it again this year, pretty soon, for my GAP tour. It was especially easy for

I've shipped with Amtrak. It's pretty slick. Things to note:
They'll charge you for the special giant box if they don't happen to ha e a
used one around. $15 I think?
They won't let you put anything else in the empty space. I'd thought I
could stash my empty panniers in the void. Nope.

Not shipping but I traveled with a bike on Amtrak. I would not hesitate to use
them for shipping. I wasn't aware they offered such a service.

I recently sold a bike and shipped it via Amtrak to New York. Shipping,
including insurance, was about $80. I used their box (bigger than the box you
would use for BikeFlights) and a bunch of pipe insulation to cushion the bike,
and it arrived safe and sound at the Amtrak station in Syracuse in

Anyone used Amtrak to ship their bike? Trying to get my bike to the east
coast. Have used BikeFlights, but looking for an alternative.
