I use cheap panniers for my daily commuting and break out the
expensive ones for touring and camping. I zip tie and hose clamp them
so that you can't just walk off with them.
Over the years I have had people go through them a few times. Recently
some a-hole stole a water bottle, a tube, and a 10
I leave mine on for the very reason you've mentioned; I've had no problems
so far. As a matter of habit, I don't leave things like the camera or my
wallet in it when the bike's unattended for long.
Cheers!

You can use something like a luggage lock to discourage casual pilferers.
Parking it in areas where such actively will be noticed also helps. I've
never had anyone try to get into saddle or panniers.

Mine stays attached to the bike. No one has ever messed with it while the bike
is parked out in public (so far, but just in case I leave no attractive
valuables in it. Someone might steal my rain cape, I suppose, but I think
that's unlikely).

One small thing to add that hasn't been mentioned is zip tying through the
holes of your leather straps and around the saddle rails. I do this as a little
added precaution. Depending on whether you strap your saddlebag with buckles
out or buckles hidden, pick the side that would require a
That is a great idea. I leave my saddle bag on the Hunq all the time, I never
leave my tablet, phone or camera. About all they could take would be the tire
irons, tube or the whole bag. Zip ties would be a great way to secure the bag.

Wow you guys are a lot less paranoid then me. After the recent thread about
lights being stolen, i just can't leave my saddlebag on the bike. even when i
go to starbucks and have a mostly unobstructed view i take it off.
I use racks on both my saddles (a berthoud one, and the older Nitto
Minh makes an interesting point - if the bag itself is worth $200+, it may
cause stress to leave it unattended. That said, I've never experienced any
saddlebag theft or vandalism. If theft is a concern on certain occasions, I
use an easy-on/easy-off Ortlieb pannier instead.

Hi Minh,
One of my bikes has a large Saddlesack (which we know is pricey, at least
for me), and the other bike has a Swift Industries Zeitgeist (also not
cheap for me), but I just don't worry about them. I guess I live in a
pretty bicycle-centric city (Seattle) so it's maybe a little less
My carradice is time consuming to take on and off. I recently got a
new sprung saddle that makes it near impossible to get the straps thru the
loops in less than a few minutes.
I don't want to add more clutter on the bike with a QR. Just wondering if
it is feasable to just leave it on when out
