I would never design such a system. That is what MPPT controllers are for. 10 years ago we did not have that choice, but now we do, so there is no reason at all to design a 40 amp 12 volt array circuit. .

Ben, Here in Maine we don't install diesel gennies in off grid applications. Typically, diesel gennies require a block heater which can use as much as 1000 watts. Unless this is a tremendously large off grid system it won't be a good idea to go that way. Why not just use a propane gennie. The
