The spec sheet for the SS-MPPT says 75 volts maximum open circuit.  Maximum PV power: 200 watts for 12-volt batteries and 400-watts for 24-volt batteries.  While it is supposed to be protected from PV overload and PV high voltage, it doesn't seem surprising that failures that have been observed

All controllers have failures – most commonly due to user/installer errors. Of all the controllers we sell, Morningstar have been by far the most trouble free and has the best no-hassle warranty. We have probably sold/installed around 100 to 200 of the SS-MPPT-15 controllers over the past year

And that's why we sell Morningstar as well. We don't use them in our own residential installations, as they're not listed. But for small unpermitted systems they work well, with occasional failures. But for retail sales (a tiny part of our business) the advantages

Fellow Wrenches, What generator manufacturer are you currently recommending for off grid use? A Kohler 18RES (LP, 3,600 rpm, air cooled) a customer installed last year has already failed after 370 hours of use during 6 months of construction and winter occupancy. It consumed enough oil to cau

I've got customers using the Onan 1800-rpm liquid-cooled 20-KW and 30-kW LP residential generators without any problems.  While Onan doesn't exclude off-grid use, the warranty is only 1-year 1000-hours for off-grid applications. Kent Osterberg Blue Mountain Solar, Inc. Randy Brooks wrote: Fe

Randy, I have seen issues with Kohler's as well. But some of them perform well. When Kohler changed their warranty I had a meeting with the company owner that installs and services their units. We decided on a middle ground. Rather than moving all off grid systems to a different genset, we
