This week's edition of Business Week indicates a significant gain in
the use of Linux servers (over Sun and Microsoft) and shows
Redhat as one of the "Winners" in the "Winners and Losers"
column of the article.
Worth a quick read if you are interested in that aspect of the
software game.

It sounds like your system has been cracked badly. The programs
chattr, lsattr, etc are installed by the e2fsprogs rpm during install. It
is highly possible that t

That was one of the first things I tried, but it didn't resolve the issue.
Your diagnosis makes sense, but I didn't see any other locks on the
files. Next
FWIW, I have noticed that on very rare occasions rpm has gone
into "hang" mode (usually when installing a new glibc). The only
way to clear it was to do a "killall -9 rpm" from another screen. This
has only happened on the smp boxen running RH 8.0 or Rawhide,
however.

Oddly enough, I had a similar problem on an smp development box
running Rawhide (beta) when I tried to upgrade to the new and
improved glibc set. Lots of "I can only do PRIVATE_DB" type
messages, rpm only worked from user accounts (not root) and no
ability to reverse the glibc change.

The symptom was umount2 couldn't unmount /usr. We added a
diagnostic mod to /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt. Adding a call to /sbin/fuser to
find the offending pid(s) and then to /sbin/lsof to see exactly what files
were preventing the umount we got:

Was the directory " /initrd " deleted perchance?
Somehow we deleted this directory on a smp dual athlon 2100
machine recently and ended up with the same problem. Restored it
using the CD to boot rescue and has worked fine ever since.

I discovered that openssl-0.9.6.9 appears not to have undefined
references. That came out two security updates ago, however.
Has anyone else observed the "OpenSSLDie" problem with the
latest openssl security updates (10 and 14) or do I just have some
quirk in my installation??
