nis login failures

I recently installed 6.2 on some machines and configured them for nis logins. When a user logs in the screen flashes and jumps back to the login screen. in /var/log/messages is the following: Feb 19 04:30:12 lpc13 PAM_pwdb[10565]: (gdm) session opened for user wombat by (uid=0) Feb 19 04:30:12
