Does anybody know if there's a compelling reason for not
including the pax command in the redhat distribution?
There appears to be BSD-licensed code in FreeBSD we
could use, and some people claim (although I disagree)
that it's the new archiving standard.

out I had a copy of /etc/rc.d/ in one of the tmp
directories. (I think that linuxconf or rpm left it behind.)
I'd bet you have the same thing going on.
Try this: find /tmp -print ; find /var/tmp -print
