Install on another computer - download the 386 kernel from
redhat.com and install it then move the drive into the 386 computer.
For some reason theres no 386 kernel on the install set but there is a 386
kernel in the errata directory on the redhat ftp server.

Sound like xfs isn't running - this is the font server try
:
service xfs start
and then try X - if it works you need to set xfs to run at boot with
:
chkconfig xfs on

Actually they are mainly backporting patches from the newer
versions to the versions in the current redhat release so most of the time the
new release is already fixed. The reasoning behind this is to keep the
release feature stable while keeping up with security & bug
fixes.

Actually chkconfig also lists services handled by xinetd
so you will need to look in /etc/xinetd.d too

I've noticed the memory leak too - i find that after a few hours that my computer has
