If you're installing another boot loader then just install it over grub.
If you're getting rid of linux in favor of some other OS... then you'll need
to check that OS for how to rewrite the boot sector.
for windows stuff just put in a win98 boot floppy and run fdisk /mbr

the MBR of a hard drive (512 bytes) has the following format:
446 bytes: boot code (LILO, GRUB, whatever)
64 bytes: partition table
2 bytes: boot sect
