Does gdm do this in xterms as well at the virtual consoles? Could it be
that it is not running?
Also I have seen boxes that were configured to have the middle button
emulated by clicking both buttons at the same time. You might try that.

you'd rather I didn't spoil the fun, don't read it :) Anyway, grab the RH
install disk and boot up with it. at the boot prompt type "vmlinuz
