Updating glibc*-2.3.2-27.9.i386.rpm on an i686 or Athlon system seems to
be a common way of killing a system... and by some reports it may even
happen if you're using up2date.
Here are some interesting threads on the topic:

That's all!!!

start from redhat-cdrom into rescue-mode and install the last working
version you got.
maybe you have to use chroot to get the paths right (i think --root is
the option).

Download your old rpm package and "rpm -ivh --force --allfiles x.rpm"
it should work.

Hello,
i just ran into sth weird.
I manually applied the glibc update and
replaced:
glibc-2.2.93-5.i686.rpm
glibc-common-2.2.93-5.i386.rpm
glibc-devel-2.2.93-5.i386.rpm
with the updates:
glibc-2.3.2-4.80.i686.rpm
glibc-common-2.3.2-4.80.i386.rpm
glibc-devel-2.3.2-4.80.i386.rpm
Simply
wine: relocation error: /usr/lib/wine/libntdll.dll.so: symbol __fork,
version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
:-(
Rebuilding wine should fix this, huh?

Hi,
I am running RH6.2 with all updates applied. I have just updated
the new glibc packages. Since then I have seen Netscape crash with
a bus error very frequently. Am I the only one to have observe
this problem?
Thanks.

OK, I used this and found that I currently have "glibc-2.2.4-19 i386"

I'm trying to install the glibc update that was just announced. I use the
command "up2date -u" but it fails with the error
RPM conflict error. The message was:
Test install failed because of package conflicts:
package glibc-2.2.4-19.3 is for a different architecture

Hello All,
I have a production server RH 5.2, standard kernel, 2.0.36.
This unfortunately cannot change (at least for now).
I need to install MySQL, latest version 3.23.36.
MySQL server installs ok but MySQL client fails with
dependancies for glibc.so.6 and libpthread.so.0

It asks whether it should skip them or not... just don't skip them,
and it will do this update.

Can anyone explain the following to me? I was able to update glibc-devel,
with no problems, using up2date...but up2date won't update glibc itself,
so I obtained the RPMS. Here's the result:
linux:~#rpm -qa | grep glibc
glibc-2.2-9
glibc-devel-2.2-12
linux:~#rpm -U glibc-2.2-12.i386.rpm
error:
Hey all,
I just tried to install the updates to glibc
(glibc-2.1.3-21.i386.rpm, glibc-devel-2.1.3-21.i386.rpm,
glibc-profile-2.1.3-21.i386.rpm), and got a heap gob of errors on the glibc
install. The errors look like this:
